Developing Next Generation After School Programming in STEM

The global community is moving at lightening speed. New innovations in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) are coming online daily.  Afterschool programs are critical to ensuring that youth are exposed to new and more effective ways of learning. Unfortunately, many after school programs lack the resources and the rigor to provide youth with high quality hands-on experiences that prepare them for careers in STEM.

The purpose of the workshop is to help attendees design and model effective hands-on STEM activities that increase student capacity in critical thinking, reading, math and scientific processes.  For example, attendees of the workshop will design, perform and rate a variety of hands-on experiments ranging from generating the fourth state of matter to creating bioplastic to flying autonomous drones.

The program will be very intensive and require in-depth analysis, review, redesign and documentation of current and future after school programming activities as well as development of a resource management including applying for grants to establishing and reshaping facilities to support robust hands-on experiments and research for youth.  The workshop will also involve a deep dive into national next generation science standards and how to integrate them into afterschool learning.  You will walk away with a “implementation ready” plan to take your after school STEM program to the next level.

The workshop will be led by Keith Young, CEO and founder of Ecotek Lab, a global leader in the design, development and operations of advanced STEM research and innovation after school programs. Ecotek Lab was founded in the City of Detroit and reaches thousands of students, teachers, and families across the United States and abroad.  Student scientists have been able to develop rich and robust research portfolios that have resulted in millions of dollars in college scholarships; the formation of STEM startup companies; and the development of scientific solutions ranging from microbial alternative energy systems to drug discovery. In addition to the City of Detroit, Ecotek Lab has research facilities and school partnerships in Baltimore, Maryland, Orlando, Florida, Tucson Arizona and St. Louis, Missouri.  It also has research partnerships with member countries at the United Nations and with major governmental agencies such as the Department of Defense.

Upon completing the workshop, the attendee will be able to:

  • Identify 5 key learning goals for an advanced STEM after school program
  • Develop a multi-phase STEM plan that integrates school curriculum with after school activities
  • Perform complex hands-on STEM activities that are aligned with research based innovation models

The workshop is best suited for individuals in the following roles:

  • Director of After School Programs
  • Curriculum Director/Program Coordinator
  • School Leader
